Danish for Foreigners
VUF offers courses in Danish at all levels (beginners, intermediate and advanced) for all foreigners - regardless of educational background.
We have a course for you whether you have no previous schooling, short, medium length or long
schooling, or you are used to studying (i.e. have at least 12 years of schooling) and are proficient in English.
You can enroll in a Danish course if you need to learn Danish or if you need to improve your Danish - for example your pronunciation, oral and written proficiency, reading skills etc.
In order to be eligible you must:
- be over 18 years
- have a Danish social security number (personnummer)
- be a foreign national (normally)
Placing of Students
You will be given a place in a Danish course - Danish 1, 2, 3a or 3b (and modules/levels) - based on your schooling, your proficiency in Danish and your learning profile (how fast you will be able to learn Danish).
The aim of all Danish courses is that you pick up enough Danish and learn enough about Danish society to be able to hold a job and function as a member of the Danish society.
In addition, Danish courses 2 and 3 aim to help you qualify for entrance to various tertiary education programmes and further education.
Module Tests and Official Exams
Each module concludes with a test, and you only progress to the next level if you have achieved all the learning objectives specified for the module. The result of the test applies at course place assignment at all language centres in Denmark (and at other institutions offering Danish courses).
All courses conclude with official exams (Danish Test 1, Danish Test 2, Danish Test 3 and after module 6 in Danish 3b the Study Test of Danish as a Second Language). Test scores are calculated according to the Danish -3 to12 grading scale. At VUF, we conduct all official Danish course tests.
It is possible to take the official tests at VUF without attending the courses. Outside entrants pay a fee of DKK 1149 for Danish Tests 1, 2 and 3, and the fee for the Study Test of Danish as a Foreign Language is DKK 690 for the written part and DKK 690 for the oral part. The tests are held in May/June and November/December. Registration for the tests takes place at the beginning of March and September.
Assigning Courses
A counsellor will assign you a place in a specific Danish course and a specific module and make sure that the best possible course plan is set up for you before you begin the course. In addition you will receive guidance about the course and how to complete it, and you will be informed about requirements concerning attendance and active participation as well as procedures if you fail to attend the course.
The following outlines entrance requirements for the different Danish courses:
Danish 1
For students with little or no school background who have not learnt to read and write in their native language - or are unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet.
Danish 2
For students with short schooling from their native countries, who are expected to be relatively slow learners of Danish as a second language.
Danish 3
For students with medium length or long schooling from their native countries, who are expected to be relatively quick learners of Danish as a second language. For students with a normal acquisition curve, we call it Danish 3a.
Danish 3b is for students who are particularly quick language learners. It normally requires 12 years of previous schooling, proficiency in English and motivation and time for a fair amount of homework. Furthermore most 3b-students have a language background relatively similar to Danish.
